Fresh Green Soybeans - EDAMAME are a great thing to snack on any time of the day. G
There won't be many Heirloom Tomatoes, because they are now on their downhill slide. But luckily there are still a lot of excellent Hybrid and Romas, so get them while you can!
On this lovely Labor Day weekend, Henry suggests that you expand your grilled-vegetable horizons:

- Negi - In Japan, these large true scallions are used in many dishes, especially in yaki-tori (grilled chicken on skewers), and alone as yaki-negi (grilled negi). Just brush them with oil, sprinkle with salt, and throw them on the grill!
- Kabocha - including both the Red Kuri and the Green Kabocha. Cut into thin slices (no need to peel because the skin is thin and completely edible), brush with oil, and grill.
- Okra -- Even people who don't think they like okra like grilled okra! b
- Cherry Tomatoes - Just put them on a screen or piece of foil and grill them whole.
- Peppers of all descriptions -- Jimmy Nardello, Italian Sweet, Colored Bell peppers, and of course the Shishito (pictured above).
- And more common grilling vegetables, such as Onions, Carrots, Eggplant, and Zucchini

As we switch gears from summer to fall, we would like to invite you to our Annual Farm Tour and Potluck on Saturday, October 1. This is a wonderful opportunity for you and your family and friends to come see where all your food comes from, get a guided tour of the farm by Henry himself, and take your best shot at his "Name That Vegetable" quiz!

Magness Pears. |
It's PEAR DAY at the Market!!!
This week we have two kinds of Asian pears and three kinds of European pears.
- Hosui--This early Asian pear has an almost caramel-y sweet flavor and a very crisp crunch. Wonderful as a snack or chunked up in a green salad with blue cheese and spiced pecans.
- New Century--Another Asian pear with a sweet flavor and a juicy, crunchy texture.
- Seckel--If you missed the market last week because of the rain, you almost missed my favorite pear of all time. Seckel pears are small, but their flavor is BIG. The melt-in-your-mouth smoothness combined with a sweet and slightly spicy flavor make for the perfect treat!
- Magness--This is a new pear for me and has a very good chance of rivaling Seckel for my #1 pear. It is a larger pear, and when perfectly ripe is drip-down-your-chin juicy and so sweet and smooth. We picked the whole (small) tree, so this is the only week we will have them.
- Turnbull--I grafted this tree from one that my Dad grew. It's a hard, crunchy pear that probably has some Asian genes. It is an interesting combination of sweet and tart. I love to eat it plain, but it's also great for baking, alone or combined with apples, in crisps, cakes, and pies. This is a favorite of many Evanston market-goers!
Only Apple Seconds this Week! Buy a half bushel and make some applesauce!
Our main apple season is over. We will have some Winesaps in a few weeks and possibly a few other kinds here and there, but if you've been procrastinating about putting up applesauce for winter, don't put it off anymore because this is likely the last apple "seconds" opportunity of the season!
Our seconds have more blemishes, maybe even some some bug holes and soft spots, but, at half price, they are perfect if you want to make some applesauce or bake a pie or a crisp.
These seconds are available in quarts for half price and also in half bushels! They will be a combination of Freedom, Burgundy, Honeycrisp, and Heritage Red Delicious.
Really...this is the last week for fresh aronia berries!
After last week's rainy market, we DO still have some aronia berries. If you missed them last week, don't do it again this week. I will NOT have frozen aronia this year so you need to buy fresh berries and do the freezing yourself. It's easy....just dump them in a freezer bag and throw them in the freezer! Really, it's that easy!
Ground Cherries- Not too many....come early!
Home-Grown and Hand-Made Herb Teas
Last week I never even got my tea out of the van because I didn't want to get it wet. My helper Katy and I have been drying my herbs and gradually restocking all of my teas. This week we will have most of the old favorites including:- Mint Tea
- Te de Manzanilla
- Sunny Lemon with Chamomile
- Lavender Dreams
- Aronia Berry
- Blue Shiso
- Peter Rabbit's
- Country Anise
- Stinging Nettle with Chocolate Mint

NEW!! Chi-town Chai--This new tea takes the place of Thai Spice and is named in honor of our Chicago area customers. It's similar to Thai Spice but has more of a real Chai flavor, with a midwest twist. The ingredients are cinnamon basil, anise hyssop, ginger, cardamom. cinnamon stick, and black pepper. Try it!
NEW!! Blackberry Peach Jam!
Because of the wet season, I ended up with a freezer full of blackberry and peach "for-us-es." So many in fact, that it's too many "for us", so I made a batch of jam. These specialty batches are small, so don't out it off--buy it when you see it!
Coming soon....Blueberry Peach Lavender Jam...watch for it!
