If we don't have it, you don't need it! |
This week I'm bringing up ALL my fabulous plant starts for your garden, patio, or windowsill -- from the cool-weather broccoli, kale, and herbs to the warm-weather tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. We have just about every kind of herb and vegetable plant start you could possibly want, and a greater variety than you will find anywhere else.
Under the Big Top
This is the season when Henry's and my stands kind of do a reversal. For most of the market season, Henry's stand is huge, with 6 to 8 10x10 tents full to bursting, tables piled high with produce. My stand next-door is normally just two tents, albeit also full to overflowing with fruit and herbs. But during May, Henry has one tent, maybe two, as the vegetables slowly ramp up, while my stand would need 8 or 9 tents to cover my 25 tables, themselves covered with more than 50 huge trays of plants starts.
Where else can you find 89 kinds of tomato plant varieties?
Nowhere we know of! And I specially select each and every variety for its tastiness and productivity. On top of that, we grow all the plant starts using organic seed whenever available, and always with organic practices-- none of the killer -cides that plant starts in most nurseries and garden shops are doused with.Don't wait to plant broccoli, kale, brussels sprouts, and salad greens!
The sooner you plant these cool weather loving plants, the happier they'll be. I planted all of the broccoli seeds at the same time, then transplanted a few starts outdoors a couple weeks ago. Those plants are now twice the size of the ones still in the peat pots. So get your plants on Saturday, and get them outside! The sooner you do, the more produce you'll get to harvest and eat!
All brassicas, or cruciferous vegetables, are extremely nutritious -- especially high in folic acid and vitamins A, C, and K. They are also low in calories, fat, and sodium, and a good source of fiber. They are also an excellent source of a group of phytonutrients called glucosinolates, which play an important role in cancer prevention.
So grow some broccoli and kale right outside your door and have a ready supply of delicious, nutritious brassicas on hand at all times! To encourage you, we're having a . . .

First Week for Tomatoes, Peppers, Eggplants, Cucumbers, and Squash.
The next few nights will be cool, but get your plants this Saturday and plant them outside after Monday. Because of some cool spring, and some poor germination, there are very limited quantities of some tomato varieties. Take home message:If you see the varieties that you like, buy them! Don't wait until the next market, because there might not be more coming up and s/he who hesitates loses out!
Fresh Herbs
Each week we will have more varieties of herbs. Look for our Pineapple Mint and Mojito Mint this week, as well as lots and lots of chives (3 kinds!), thyme (3 kinds!), and oregano.
Try our recipe for Gluten-Free Chive Pancakes with Kira's Garlic Ginger Dipping Sauce. It's delicious, and served with a salad, it's a whole meal.
Kira's Flowers
Speaking of Kira, look in our stand each week to see what flowers she is sending up. Last week she had gorgeous bunches of tulips that sold like hotcakes. This week, she will send up the last of her tulips and a few peonies!
